Acting Through Song And Dance Reflection

 This blog will involve analysis and reflection of the lessons from the start of the year to the performance. The objective was to develop performance skills through the two disciplines of dance and singing to progress as a performer for the professional industry. There will be recognition of strengths and weaknesses shown through the lessons. It will include issues and challenges encountered throughout the lessons and target setting to improve as a performer.

First Acting Through Song lesson

  In the first lesson of acting through song, it was chosen that ‘Never enough’ by Loren Allred from ‘The Greatest Showman’ would be sung. This song was selected because it was advised to choose a song that could create an emotional connection to make the performance element easier to achieve. This is relevant as Open Mic says, “ Whatever the audition be sure to connect to the message in the song. You want to get your story across and the feel of the song, so you can bring the audition judges on a journey with you" (Openmic, 2021). Overall Progression

To conclude, there were many lessons taken from the experiences of the sessions and rehearsals that will be used in the future. Also, there were weaknesses and strengths recognised throughout the module that will be targeted to improve on. There is evidence of the progression from the start of the year to the end performance made in the lessons and rehearsals. The progression made was starting from not having the ability to create facial expressions to creating a variety of facial expressions and portraying different characters in the performances. The discipline of acting through song and Dance has become a new skill that will uphold continuous work to make it a professional standard. This knowledge can be taken to future auditions for potential employment. There was also a discovery of strategies to face new challenges to avoid a lack of productivity. Dance Rehearsals

For the Dance performance, ‘Body Love’ by Mary Lambert was selected because there is a personal connection to the story of the lyrics. This is because there is a relation to personal thoughts and feelings which were used for interpretation. This meant that the acting would come more naturally, mainly as Dance is a stronger discipline. R ather than making it a "typical Savanna Dance" with lots of jumps and tricks, it was choreographed to be Physical Theatre or Lyrical. This made it more expressive and meaningful. This is because unlike a "typical savanna dance" where there is little thought in the choreography due to having more confidence, this style is more creative and thought through. As this is a style that is less confident personally, it made the rehearsals more challenging and the creative process longer.
