Dance Rehearsals

For the Dance performance, ‘Body Love’ by Mary Lambert was selected because there is a personal connection to the story of the lyrics. This is because there is a relation to personal thoughts and feelings which were used for interpretation. This meant that the acting would come more naturally, mainly as Dance is a stronger discipline. Rather than making it a "typical Savanna Dance" with lots of jumps and tricks, it was choreographed to be Physical Theatre or Lyrical. This made it more expressive and meaningful. This is because unlike a "typical savanna dance" where there is little thought in the choreography due to having more confidence, this style is more creative and thought through. As this is a style that is less confident personally, it made the rehearsals more challenging and the creative process longer. Despite this, it was shown to be a strength throughout the rehearsal process. This is because there was the ability to have something to show back every week despite not having a completed routine. These show backs received a lot of feedback which helped to further develop and change the routine to produce a creative result by the end. There were words considered that were linked to the story of the Dance, like “body, stomach, and ugly." There was an attempt to spell out these words through movement to help form choreography when creativity was a challenge. In personal opinion, it was not to satisfactory and was not used in the final product. A strength that was shown was the progression of the first draft of the Dance. For example, the consideration of pathways (see image), which uses the knowledge of choreographic principles to use the space creatively, made the Dance more interesting. This was formed from the starting pathway which was in the shape of a zig-zag which is coloured black on the image to a developed pathway which is coloured green on the image. The cognition from the rehearsal process was not to be overwhelmed by new challenges that are not in the natural comfort zone, as these opportunities promote development as a performer.

Lessons on 'Rent'

These lessons consisted of developing an understanding of how to interpret a character through Dance. A Factor that was taken into consideration was character profile:- name, age, type of person, background, the reason for living in the property, relationships, and circumstances. These were considered to apply creative choices to the character. This is because these change the way the character moves, the way they act and what facial expressions are appropriate for the character to be able to perform successfully. These lessons were used to create the character for the dance assessment. For example, this is evident in the section where the back is faced away from the audience and the top is pulled off. This was a simple yet powerful moment as the embodiment of freedom was projected. This proves that emotion is embodied throughout the body in Dance, particularly when the audience can't see the face for the emotion.
