First acting through Dance lesson
For the first lesson of acting through dance, there was a short phrase of movement choreographed which then involved adding a chosen emotion. There was a conflict between intrigue and doubt during this, as expression is identified as a personal weakness. The challenge was to portray natural emotion, rather than just smiling, which is commonly referenced to be “fake” emotion. This knowledge and experience will prove to be helpful for the future in industry environments. Casting directors like to know that you can interpret a character or role to its full potential, which will lead to a more successful audition and impression. This is evidenced by Wallace stating, “If this is what is naturally being expressed, that is what the people in the room will connect to and they’ll have an immediate, positive response to you" (Wallace. C, 2021) A good thing to come from this experience was taking a choreographed phrase and learning to move and act in a way needed to fit the emotion. The emotion chosen was ‘love’. This made the movement lighter and more playful than the original choreography. The interpretation taken was “a couple’s first date.” This changed the facial expressions to be happy and shy to show this scenario. These choices were proven to be successful as the emotion was guessed. However, the bad thing was that the expression was not shown to be big enough to be fit for stage, and it could have been stronger and more precise to help the audience understand the characterisation more. Despite this, the experience developed an understanding of how to create physical and facial expression and characterisation appropriately for a particular role through a simple stimulus like an emotion. If the opportunity to repeat this lesson came, there would have been more thought and rehearsal of how to embody the emotion, as this would have made the end performance more convincing. This could have been done by research of how the emotion feels or is shown. This learning will be used as an exercise in the future to support character creation through a dance audition or other professional application.
